2018 Linebacker of the Year: Southwest DeKalb’s Derico Smith Jr.

DeKALB – The 2018 honors continue to roll in and the next stop on the DeKalb Recruits list was Derico Smith Jr.

Smith had a good season compiling 89 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, causing three fumbles while recovering two of them. But outside of the stats each week, Smith called this season special.

ReporterDarius: You were named the 2018 Linebacker Of the Year by DeKalb Recruits this week. How’s that honor felt?

Derico Smith Jr: I felt that it was a true blessing to be named linebacker of the year I thank god after every game I play because it was a true blessing to be able to accomplish some of the things I did. I also want to thank everybody who didn’t believe in this dream because I knew I was gone be something special.

RD: It was an impressive season for you, describe it for us.

DS: This season was special because I was able to step up in big ball games when my team needed me the most.

RD: When you were going through the season, what was your driving force?

DS: Always have faith and never give up because I got something to prove.

RD: What did you change to improve your game throughout the season?

DS: I changed my mindset throughout the season. I knew that when I’m sleeping there is somebody up watching film or getting better. I stayed up late at night watching film focusing on the plays and the type of players that I was going against.

RD: What’s next for you?

DS: Next is college. I know where I’m going and trust me it’s going to be somewhere special!

RD: Where were your goals at this season?

DS: I didn’t have no personal set goal this season I had a mindset and the mindset I had was to put my team in the best position to win and to lay down the foundation for the young guys.
