Towers softball comes into 2018 with new field and high hopes

DECATUR – Towers High’s Lady Titans softball program returns to the field after an 11-14 season but there was a lot of change with the program for head coach Wardrickes Britton.
Britton comes into 2018 with four seniors graduated, two of whom made the County All-Star team. Towers will also have no returning players to the fold.
Britton called the roster turnover the magic of teaching and coaching at a Title I school.
“Every year is a new beginning and a lot of these girls don’t play travel ball,” Britton said. “The first time they pick up a softball it’s on Towers field the first day of tryouts. It is a gift and curse of sorts, because it is hard building a program without returning players but as a coach it builds tremendous character when you have to start fresh every year. I’ve always been in love with the game, and it warms my heart to be here as a resource to encourage, assist, and guide these young ladies any way that I can.”
After a season where the Lady Titans have a new team, the program is also going to be on their brand new field that they won in a field makeover contest.
“We recently won a field makeover contest with 680 the Fan, Howard Brothers and Synovus Bank as a part of the bank’s “Here Matters” initiative. The field was completely tiled, re-lined, and leveled,” Britton said. “The makeover included, sodding around both the softball and baseball fields to help with flooding when it rains and customizing the dugouts. To help ensure long-term maintenance, the Howard Brothers donated a lawn mower and Academy Sports donated a gift card, buckets of softballs, an instant net, batting tees and score books.”
Britton says that the expectations for the season are hopes of nothing but positive things.
“I’m excited for them to get as much exposure as possible and to learn as much about the game of softball, the importance of teamwork and how it can shape their everyday lives,” Britton said. “My goal is for every single player on the team to become a student of the game.”
