50TH DeKalb County Swimming Championships Taking Place This Weekend

Defending Class 5A/4A State Champs Chamblee Lady Bulldogs set to defend their DCSD County title at the 50th DCSD County Swim Championships this weekend.

Defending Class 5A/4A State Champs Chamblee Lady Bulldogs set to defend their DCSD County title at the 50th DCSD County Swim Championships this weekend.

Defending champions Chamblee (girls) and Lakeside (boys) headline the 50th DCSD County Swim Championships beginning tonight at Chamblee High School Natatorium.

The one-meter diving event kicks off the meet at 5:00 pm with the boys followed at 5:39 by the girls. The 24 event meet has 433 entries, including 422 in 22 events (63 heats).

Saturday’s reprise gets off to a fast start at 10:00 am with the always exciting 200m medley relay and wrapping up around 1:30 with the 400m freestyle relay.

Chamblee’s Kyla Maloney won the 100 backstroke (record of 57.05) and the 500m freestyle (5:17.61) as a freshman a year ago and returns to defend her titles for the defending Class 5A state champion Lady Bulldogs. Maloney took silver at state in the backstroke and is joined by Sophia Bell who finished third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle in last year’s county competition.

Runner-up Dunwoody is led by diver Lauren Davis who won the one-meter diving event a year ago and put on a great performance to finish second in the state diving in 2019. Ashley Altera returns following her silver medal in the 200 freestyle last winter to go with a sixth place finish in the 100 butterfly. Bronze medal diving finalist Avery Maxwell also returns.

Paige Meisner (100 and 50 freestyle), Olivia Rotolo (200 IM and 500 freestyle), Phoebe Mansker (200 IM and 100 breaststroke) and Audrey Bender (100 freestyle) all return to compete for Lakeside after placing in the top six in events last year.

Arabia Mountain’s Olivia Terrell (5th, 100 breaststroke) returns to better her 2019 performance.

Decatur’s Hally Laney won the 200 freestyle and was third in the 500 and returns in 2020 along with teammate Annie Pfeufer wo won silver in the 50 and 500 freestyle a year ago.

Defending boys’ champ Lakeside returns Matthew Karpen (bronze in 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly) along with Jack Hobbs (silver in 50 and fifth in 100 freestyle events) and Jack Van Valkenburg (500 freestyle bronze and fifth in 200 IM).

Nicholas Bragg who won the 100 butterfly and was third in the 200 IM returns to lead 2019 runner-up Dunwoody along with Miles Gumbrill (fourth 200 IM, fifth 100 backstroke) and fourth place diver Noah Glick.

Third place Chamblee has 2019 diving runner-up Andrew Stowe returning with teammates Will Decker and Thomas Rice.

Decatur finished fourth a year ago with returnees Jason Hinson (fourth in 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly) and Simon Abrahamse (bronze in 100 breaststroke, 6th 200 IM).
