Alvin Williams, a senior defensive end at Cedar Grove, is the Georgia High School Football Daily (GHSFD) State Player of the Week for his performance Friday in a 40-10 victory over Pace Academy.

The award, sponsored by AstroTurf and Sports Turf, was presented to Williams at Cedar Grove this past Wednesday. The award was started this season and honors a top player each week during the season.

Williams had a career-high five sacks against Pace. A three-year starter, Williams (6-4, 235) has 18.5 sacks for his career and 67 tackles, 10 sacks, 19 tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries on the season.

During Williams’ time as a starter, Cedar Grove is 34-4 with 15 shutouts. The run includes three Region 5-3A championships (2017-2019) and the 2018 Class 3A state title.

Cedar Grove coach Miguel Patrick said that pass-rushing is Williams’ chief asset. He’s projected as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense at Colorado, whose head coach is former Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. But Patrick put Williams at middle linebacker for the second half of Cedar Grove’s 2018 state-championship season because of an injury to the original starter.

“He was the best candidate because he’s so fast and athletic,” Patrick said. “He’s just a high-energy player with a motor that’s out of this world.”

Previous winners this season include Kobe Hudson of Troup, Jahmyr Gibbs of Dalton, JaQues Evans of Dublin, Daijun Edwards of Colquitt County, Tyler Bride of Greater Atlanta Christian, Asanta Das of Allatoona, Khiari McCoy of Carver (Columbus) and Kameron Wilson of Mount Zion (Jonesboro).
