Thirty-Five individuals qualified for the Class 4A Sectional B at North Oconee High School on Saturday (May 8) behind strong second palce performances by the Druid Hills Lady Red Devils and Stephenson Jaguars at the recent Region 6-4A Track and Field Championships.
The Lady Red Devils qualified four participants in six events on the way to 109 points to finish second behind Marist (205) while Arabia Mountain (102) was third.
Sanaa Frederick locked the fastest girl title at the meet with gold medals in 100 (12.21) and 200-meter (25.40) dashes to lead the way for Druid Hills. Harley Martz picked up a pair of silver medals placing second in the 1600-meter (5:14.72) and 3200-meter (11:36.02) runs. The Druid Hills 4×100-meter realy team of Ariel Bouer-Schlitt, Jadyn Bolden, Frederick and Erielle Reid won the gold in a time of 48.12.
Arabia Mountain’s third place finish was fueled by Shani Simon’s win in the 400-meter dash (57.22) and Candace Taylor’s win in the long jump (17-00.00) and third in the 300-meter hurdles (49.30). The 4×400 relay team of Davenae Fagan, Kailey Elliott, Arielle Brayboy and Simon captured the gold with a time of 3:58.99.
Miller Grove finished fourth with 75 points aided by a gold medal by Faith Hill in the 300-meter hurdles (45.61) and a silver in the 400-meter dash (58.50). Angelica Frederick contributed two second place finishes in the 100-meter (12.26) and 200-meter (25.66) dashes. Miller Grove’s 4×100 relay (2nd, 48.22) and 4×400 relay (3rd, 4:10.02) picked up qualifying spots.
Stephenson finished in sixth overall led by Jamaya Allen’s gold in the shot put (30-05.00). Aniya Hernton was second in the triple jump (34-11.00) and third in the long jump (16-06.00).
Region 6-4A Boys
The Stephenson Jaguars fresh off their DeKalb County Championships win gave Marist a run for the region championship scoring 161 points to Marist’s 188.50.
Druid Hills (99) was third, Arabia Mountain (51) fifth and Miller Grove (34) sixth in the team standings.
Stephenson pulled in eight gold medals in the meet let by Bradley Favors and Isaiah Screen with two each. Favors won the 200 (21.54) and 400 (47.86) while Screen topped the field in the 110 hurdles (15.18) and triple jump (42-02.00).
Jace Coleman won the 100 (11.08) and took second in the 200 (21.73) behind his teammate, Favors. Dorian Helm won the 300 hurdles (41.01). The Stephenson 4×100 relay team of Coleman, Favors, Cordell Andrews and Abubakar Diarroussouba won in a time of 41.89 while Favors, Coleman, Helm and Christian Clowers captured first in the 4×400 relay (3:21.15).
Stephenson had seven individuals qualify for the sectional as well as all three relay teams.
Alexander Shepard was the top performer for the Red Devils clinching gold medals in the shot put (44-03.00) and discus (151-00.50). Emmanuel Greeen garnered a silver medal in the 800 (2:03.67) and a bronze in the 1600 (4:34.88).
Druid Hills put six individuals through to sectionals along with two relay teams.
Arabia Mountain put up 51 points second place finished by Lance Leonard in the high jump (5-06.00) and Adetoro Adenuga in the long jump (20-09.50). The Rams put three into the sectionals along with its 4×100 relay team.
Miller Grove had three individuals and its 4×400 relay team qualify for the sectionals. Tajeon Fletcher was the top performer for the Rams grabbing first in the high jump (5-10.00).
