Lakeside Sweeps Third Place at Class 6A State Swimming Championships

A pair of Top 5 finishes came home to DeKalb County as both the Lakeside boys’ and girls’ swim and dive teams finished third recently in the Class 6A State Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia Tech.

The Vikings put together 13 Top 8 finishes on the day to compile 282 points to come in third behind Johns Creek (408.5) and Dalton (304.5) for their second third place finish in the past three seasons. The Vikings finished third in 2019 and had not finished that high since 2006.

The 200 medley relay team of Chris Decker, Zachary Zhao, Jack Van Valkenburg and Craig Steinhauer kicked off the state meet with a bronze medal finish with a time of 1:34.30.

Zhao swam to a bronze in the 100 breaststroke in 56.68 and a fifth place finish in the 200 individual medley in 1:51.63.

Matthew Karpen went for a fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:38.44) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:43.01) for two more Top 8 performances for the Vikings.

Lakeside picked up three other sixth place finishes as Jack Van Valkenburg in the 100 butterfly (51.36), Chris Decker in the 100 backstroke (53.46) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.49). Van Valkenburg also swam to eighth in the 500 freestyle (4:42.08).

Craig Steinhauer added a seventh place finish in the 100 freestyle (47.48) and an eighth in the 50 freestyle (21.97).

Tucker’s Jared Bruce put together a pair of Top 8 performances to score 34 points for the Tigers to place them in 23rd overall. Bruce took fourth in the 100 backstroke (50.88) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (52.06).

CLASS 6A GIRLS
The Lady Vikings had not finished in the Top 5 at state since 2006 (5th) but with seven Top eight finishes grabbed third place (222) behind Lassiter (365.5) and Cambridge (335).

Senior Isabelle Jones paced the Lady Vikings reaching the podium twice for bronze medals in the 50 freestyle (24.10) and the 100 freestyle (53.25). Sophia Hook swam to a seventh place finish in the 50 freestyle (24.70) to join Jones in the Top 8.

She also teamed up with Hook, Katelyn McClintock and Phoebe Mansker to swim to a bronze medal in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.48).

Mansker, a junior, finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.07) and the 200 medley relay team of her, Hook, McClintock and Jones grabbed sixth in 1:50.44).

McClintock finished eighth in the 100 butterfly (59.39) and ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.77) to aid Lakeside’s cause.

CLASS 7A BOYS
The Dunwoody Wildcats earned a Top 15 finish in the Class 7A Boys’ State Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia Tech with 105 points.

Dunwoody was led by a solid performance by Aiden Chen. Chen grabbed a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke (56.80) and a seventh place finish in the 200 individual medley (1:55.43).

Ryan Altera produced an eighth place time of 4:43.12 in the 500 freestyle for the Wildcats.
