A three-run top of the second inning was all the Westlake Lions needed on the way to a 5-1 win in the opening game of a Region 4-6A three-game series over the Lakeside Vikings at Lakeside.
Lakeside starter Will Tansil set the Lions down in order in the first and Vikings got a pair of two out walks in the bottom of the first but left them both stranded in scoring position to head into the second inning 0-0.
Tansil got the first two Westlake batters of the second inning before Brian Hardaway singled to bring Troy Easterling to the plate. Tansil and Easterling battled each with Easterling coming out on top with a two-run shot to left field to put the Lions on top 2-0.
Westlake would pick up one more run in the inning on K.J. White’s RBI single following a pair of errors on the Viking defense. Tansil got opposing pitcher Adam Henry to fly out to right to end the damage. It would be the first of three innings in which the Lions scored runs with clutch two-out hits.
Lakeside led off the bottom of the third with a single by Isaac Terrell and a double by Joseph Garcia to put runners at second and third. Malachi Cloud followed with a RBI single to left to score Terrell to cut the lead to 3-1. Henry then worked out of the jam getting a fly ball to right, an infield fly and a strikeout.
Henry aided his own cause in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to right with two out to plate Kodi Austin who led off the inning with a single for a 4-1 Westlake lead.
Lakeside got the bases loaded with three walks in the bottom of the fourth but left the runners stranded without scoring a run.
Hardaway hit a chopper in front of the mound with two out in the fifth to score Nate Leverette to push the lead to four at 5-1.
Tansil worked out of bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth to keep the Vikings within striking distance as he got a ground ball for a force out at second with the bases loaded to end the Westlake threat.
The Vikings got a lead-off single by Lucas Uyeda to start the sixth and had the bases loaded with two out when Henry got a big strikeout to end the Lakeside threat.
Jacob Arnberger relived Tansil in the top of the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up a walk and a single.
Kmari Bush went to the mound in relief of Westlake starter Adam Henry in the bottom of the seventh and set the Vikings down in order to seal the victory.
Isaac Terrell, Joseph Garcia, Malachi Cloud, Will Tansil and Lucas Uyeda each had a hit to account for the Vikings five hits in the game. Lakeside stranded 11 runners in the game, 9 in scoring position.
Troy Washington was 2-4 with a homerun and two RBI to lead Westlake while Nate Leverett, K.J. White and Brian Hardaway all had two hits in the game.
Lakeside fell to 13-3 on the season and 8-2 in Region 4-6A while Westlake improved to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the region.
